If you have a qualifying medical condition, the Safe for Colorado program offers two types of support: (1) help with energy bills and (2) an optional program that provides extra communications—such as phone calls, emails, and TTY—during planned Public Safety Power Shutoffs or unplanned outages. Advance notifications are not required to enroll in the Medical Certification Program or Colorado Medical Exemption Program, and medical programs do not require enrollment in advance notifications.
Medical Certification Program
Medical certificates allow Xcel Energy to suspend credit action such as late fees and disconnection notices for a period of 90 days on accounts where a medical condition exists in a household to allow customers additional time to set up arrangements and/or seek energy assistance.
How the program works
Customers who have a documented medical condition can apply for medical certificates. Medical Certificates suspend shutoff action for 90 days and /or reconnect service. You may apply for this 90-day grace period once every 12 months. The Medical Certificate must be signed and completed by a Doctor (MD), Nurse Practitioner (NP), or Physician assistant (PA). During this time, Xcel Energy will not disconnect power from the property on which the individual with the medical condition resides. This certificate does not protect against unplanned outages or safety-related planned power shutoffs.
How to apply
Download the Medical Certification Form | Medical Certification Form (Spanish) and have it completed by a medical professional (medical doctor, physician assistant or nurse practitioner) on your behalf.
